Is there a place in Greece where you can find a gorge, a river, a lagoon, a stunning sandy beach, and a palm forest all in one spot?
The answer is yes, and it’s Preveli Beach! Located at the exit of Kourtaliotis Gorge, where the river of the same name flows into the sea, this beach is one of the most famous on South Crete, attracting thousands of visitors every summer.
Behind the stunning beach lies the second-largest palm forest in Greece, spanning over 40 hectares. It’s home to the rare Cretan palm tree of Theophrastus. Sadly, in the summer of 2010, a fire devastated 70% of the forest, but nature quickly took over, and the forest has regrown beautifully. Today, the area is protected by the Natura 2000 network.
Wander through the forest, where time seems to stand still. Follow the marked path (be sure to stay on it!) and immerse yourself in the greenery while listening to the soothing sounds of the flowing river. At the river’s mouth, you’ll find a serene 500m lagoon that holds water year-round, perfect for a refreshing dip. The sandy beach at the river’s exit has a pebbly bottom and cool waters thanks to the river. To the east of the beach, a striking rock formation stands tall in the sea, resembling a mast or a heart.
What makes this beach special is its untouched beauty. There are no umbrellas or sunbeds to spoil the natural charm, though you’ll find a canteen to grab the essentials. So, if you plan to visit, make sure you’re prepared, as the simplicity of the area adds to its allure.
