Elafonissi – A Slice of Paradise in Crete!
Imagine stepping into a dream where pink sand meets crystal-clear turquoise waters—welcome to Elafonissi! Located 76km west of Chania, at the southwesternmost tip of Crete, this stunning beach looks like it’s straight out of the Caribbean. But guess what? It’s real!
Elafonissi isn’t just a beach; it’s a Natura 2000 protected paradise. This magical spot is actually an oblong peninsula that often “splits” into two by shallow waters, making it feel like a separate island. The area is home to rare sand lilies, juniper trees, and even the endangered Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. So, while you can admire the beauty, remember—it’s a strictly protected zone, and taking plants or animals is a big no-no!
On either side of the peninsula, you’ll find soft white sand that shimmers with a pinkish hue, thanks to thousands of tiny crushed shells. Near the natural “break” in the peninsula, the water is so shallow (less than 1m deep!) that it forms a dreamy lagoon—perfect for kids and for wading across to the ‘island’ with your beach bag in tow.
For those who love comfort, the eastern side of the beach is well organized with umbrellas, showers, lifeguards, snack bars, and changing rooms. And if you need any more proof that this place is truly special, TripAdvisor ranked Elafonissi as the 11th Best Beach in the World in 2018!
So, are you ready to dip your toes into paradise?
